Lifeline Whiteout Walkthrough #9: The Doomsayer’s Dead

lifeline-whiteout

Having recently played this game through to completion, I decided that in the absence of a proper written walk-through, I would create one here. Warning: Spoiler Alerts! The game Lifeline: Whiteout is developed by 3 Minute and available on iTunes and Google Play. This walk-through focuses on the eighth chapter of the game titled “The Doomsayer’s Dead”.  Click here to view the table of contents/list of chapters.

Main Story

Tell me.
Am I a monster?
Be honest.

Decision A:
A1: You’re not a monster!
A2: Maybe you are? We don’t know who you are.

Decision A1: You’re not a monster!

Thanks for saying so, my friend. You’re all I’ve got now. It feels good to know there’s someone on my side.

[Decision A2: Maybe you are? We don’t know who you are joins the story-line here]

So… what should I do with his body?

Decision B:
B1: Are you sure he’s dead? Check his pulse.
B2: Check his pockets.

Decision B1: Are you sure he’s dead? Check his pulse

Just gimme a sec.
Let me get those pliers.
Not for my teeth, of course.
Having a tool like that is invaluable. I’ll clean them off in the snow.

Now, let’s see if he has a pulse.

He’s gone.

[Decision B2: Check his pockets joins the story-line here]

What?!
His… His name tag!
It’s the same as mine!
Well, almost the same. His says: “I.Adams.”

What IS this? Some kind of cruel joke?

It’s gotta be a coincidence that our last names are the same, right?

Decision C:
C1: It’s possible you could be related.
C2: It’s got to be, but I can’t prove that. [Refer to Decision C1]

Decision C1: It’s possible you could be related

I really hope we’re not.
What could he be to me? A brother? A father? A son?
I don’t think I could live with the blood of a close relative on my hands.

Why? Why would he attack me if he was?

Maybe his memories are gone too?
I’ll never know now…

[Decision C2: It’s got to be, but I can’t prove that joins the story-line here]

But that’s not important right now.
He’s dead, and Blue and I will be, too, if we don’t get going.
The storm is getting worse, again! I just hope that we’ve got enough time to reach our destination.
Talk to you then!
Blue and Adams out.

[Adams is busy]

(static)
Hey! Can you hear me over the wind?
I’ve got bad news!
There’s a huge storm cloud headed our way! If my calculations are correct, it’s going to hit in a few minutes!

The wind is so strong now that I can barely keep myself from falling down. The snow has turned to sleet!
I’m not sure what I should do…

Decision D:
D1: You need to find shelter
D2: Keep moving! Just run!

Decision D1: You need to find shelter

I’m too far from the mountains…
Not that I can see them. This sleet is making it impossible to see what’s just ahead.

[Decision D2: Keep moving! Just run! joins the story-line here]

No! Here it comes! Brace yourself, Blue!
Blue?! Where are you?! I can’t find Blue!
The storm! It’s horrifying, but it’s majestic… Breathtaking…
The world is completely white! It’s so cold that it burns like fire!
I’m in Hell, but its pits are spewing sleet!
I don’t think I’m gonna survive this…

Decision E:
E1: Don’t stop. Keep moving.
E2: Wait for the storm to pass.

Decision E2: Wait for the storm to pass

I guess you’re right. This can’t last forever.

I’ll do my best to keep warm…
It seems to be getting worse by the minute…

If you ask me, what I’m facing right now, might easily turn out to be the Apocalypse itself.
I can’t hear anything over the thundering winds!
It’s been… nice knowing you…
Wait! I see something!
It’s Blue! He came back for me!

Decision F:
F1: Follow Blue! Trust his instincts.
F2: Wait for the storm to pass.

Decision F1: Follow Blue! Trust his instincts

You’re right. I doubt this storm is letting up any time soon.
I’ll let you know if Blue finds anything.

C’mon, Blue! Lead on!

[Adams is busy]

We did it!
Or rather, Blue did it! He saved my life, again!
And guess what? He brought me straight to the relay station. I can see the blinking lights on top of the antennae.

I know someone who’s getting a double-helping of stew tonight!
I’m not sure what’s better – learning the truth about myself, or the prospect of sleeping  inside  somwhere warm!

But one way or another, I’ve got to get inside that station first.
Wait, what’s that?
Someone’s lying in the snow! He’s wearing the same jumpsuit as me… He looks hurt! Hey…
He’s dead… I couldn’t do anything.
There a lot of frozen blood…
He was shot and left there… Just lying in the snow…

Decision G:
G1: Forget him. You need to get inside.
G2: Search his body.

Decision G1: Forget him. You need to get inside

True, true. It’s almost dark. I’ve got no time to lose.
And, after all, it’s not like he’s gonna go anywhere.
I’ll examine him tomorrow morning in broad daylight.
Now, lets see about entering this relay station.
Locked! Not that I expected anything different…

[Decision H1: Look closer joins the story-line here]

Hmmm…
There must be another way in… a window I could break, or something…

But I’ve got to hurry… It’s almost night, and I can’t sleep outside.
Let me look around. Back in five!

[Adams is busy]

I was right! There’s a ventilation pipe I could easily fit in…
Someone’s already removed the grill, so getting inside shouldn’t be a problem.

Stay here, Blue! I’ll find a way to let you in.

Hmph… It’s a bit tighter than I anticipated…

And dark. Too dark, for my taste.
Wish I had a flashlight.
I’m imagining all sorts of creepy crawlers in the darkness… bugs… rats…

Luckily, they can’t thrive in conditions this cold… It’s just my imagination running wild, again.
Hell, it’s too cold for me, too! If I don’t find a way before night, I’ll freeze.

This is my only change. There’s got to be an internal ex–WHOA!
Ouch! Damn, I guess that piping was more flimsy than I thought.
It broke, and my landing… wasn’t gentle. I think I bruised my shoulder.

[END OF CHAPTER 7 / START OF CHAPTER 8]

Not too bad, though. But now I’ve got to find a way to let Blue in…
It’s pitch dark. There must be a ligh in here… It also smells… weird, too.

Alternate Routes

Decision A2: Maybe you are? We don’t know who you are

I appreciate your honesty. You’re all I’ve got now. With my memories gone… It’s just good to know I can trust you.

[Refer to the main story-line – Decision A1]

Decision B2: Check his pockets

Right. He could have something useful.
Like his pliers. I’ll clean them off in the snow.
Now if I need to rip out some nails or pry something open, this will help.

Now, let’s see if he’s got something valuable in his pockets.
Damn… I feel like a thief…

[Refer to the main story-line – Decision B1]

Decision D2: Keep moving! Just run!

Outrun a storm? Are you serious?
That’s impossible!

[Refer to the main story-line – Decision D1]

Decision E1: Don’t stop. Keep moving

Are you sure? I mean, I can’t see a thing.
But I guess I’ll freeze unless I keep moving.
It’s unnerving… Being blind like this…

What’s this? The terrain suddenly became a bit steeper…
And slippery–NO! I’m on the edge of the crevasse! I’ve got to turn back!
I just need to find safe footing to–

AHHH!

Signal interrupted.
Attempting to reconnect…
Connection lost…

[End of transmission]

Decision F2: Wait for the storm to pass

Come here, Blue! Don’t struggle. We’ll be all right!
This won’t last forever! Stay!
No, Blue! I’m not going anywhere…
We can’t get lost in this storm.
Let’s wait a bit longer… Ahh! If only it wasn’t so cold…
Blue!
He ran off! I hope he’ll be okay…
I’m starting to think that this w-waiting it out wasn’t a g-great idea…

I’m freezing… and my b-body refuses ti n-make an effort to m-move…

I j-just need… to lay d-down…
In the… snow…
And r-rest…

Signal interrupted.
Attempting to reconnect…
Connection lost…

[End of transmission]

Decision G2: Search his body

Le me just turn him so I can at least see his face…
Damn! He’s heavier than he looks…
His face!
But that’s impossible!
He’s… that doomsayer!
That guy I killed an hour ago!
How is that possible?

Decision H:
H1: Look closer.
H2: It’s not possible!

Decision H1: Look closer

It’s him! The same bony cheeks. The same glossy eyes. The same thin lips…

I’d recognise that face anywhere!
Only… there’s no blood on his face.

Call me crazy, or paranoid, or whatever you want, but I’m checking his teeth…

Okay, that was one of the most disgusting things I’ve ever done…
But his teeth are all there, a little yellowed, but no cavities… Heh.

[Decision H2: It’s not possible! joins the story-line here]

So he’s not the doomsayer after all…

Hold on! He’s got a name tag!
No. No way!
He’s an Adams too!
But he’s not “I.Adams” like the doomsayer was…
This one is “II.Adams” instead…
Is everybody in this godforsaken wasteland named Adams!?
Wait! I, II, and V? Are they roman numerals? I’m guessing, but…
It’s definitely a pattern. And there’s only one way to find the truth – I’ve got to get inside this relay station!

But, of course, it’s locked!

[Refer to the main story-line – Decision G1]

Decision H2: It’s not possible!

I’d say the same, but I’m sure… I’d remember that face anywhere.
There’s only one way to make sure it’s him: I’ll check his teeth.
Ugh! That was absolutely disgusting. But his teeth are all there! Nothing’s missing.

[Refer to the alternate route story-line – Decision H1]

Commentary & Analysis

The process flowchart for Chapter 8 is by far, one of the simplest in the game in terms of navigation. Other than two possible dead-end/endings where death occurs, all roads lead to the one destination – Chapter 9: Arrival at the Relay Station.

Given the simplicity of this flowchart, death is a 40% likelihood based on the number of possible outcomes – 80 in total. The shortest path of seven steps is once again marked above in blue. In reality, there are 16 possible ways to get to the chapter end in the same minimal seven steps. The shortest path is to make the following seven decisions:

  1. Decision A1: You’re not a monster!
  2. Decision B1: Are you sure he’s dead? Check his pulse
  3. Decision C1: It’s possible you could be related
  4. Decision D1: You need to find shelter
  5. Decision E2: Wait for the storm to pass
  6. Decision F1: Follow Blue! Trust his instincts
  7. Decision G1: Forget him. You need to get inside
