Lifeline Whiteout Walkthrough #13: In Jail With Four

lifeline-whiteout

Having recently played this game through to completion, I decided that in the absence of a proper written walk-through, I would create one here. Warning: Spoiler Alerts! The game Lifeline: Whiteout is developed by 3 Minute and available on iTunes and Google Play. This walk-through focuses on Chapter 12A, of the game titled “In Jail With Four“. Click here to view the table of contents/list of chapters. Chapter 12B is an alternate chapter titled “The Hover Truck“.

Main Story

Just tell me the truth.

I see. You will only believe if you can see it. I understand.
I shall demonstrate.

Four?  What are you do– A knife!? Where did you get that? Hey!
Stop it! Four! STOP!
He… He cut his arm! He’s… peeling back… the skin…
Oh God… Under the muscles… even with blood dripping…
His bones are metallic!
No!
Am I… Is that what I have ?
No! This is all just some feverish nightmare!

WAKE UP, ADAMS!
I can’t be a robot!
Four, I can feel things!
My body needs rest! And… I dreamed! How is any of that robotic?
I don’t even have any crazy robotic super strength! I just feel… fragil.

I feel human.
When it comes down to it, does it really watter what I am?

Decision A:
A1: No it doesn’t
A2: You need to face the truth

Decision A1: No it doesn’t

You’re very kind to say so.
I’m not dictated by some emotionless programming! I have a free will.
So, I’ll be whatever the hell I want to be.

If this is what I am. Fine. But that leaves just one thing…
Dr. Sibellius…

[Decision A2: You need to face the truth joins the story-line here]

Because this story can’t end until I learn how it all began.
I hope you understand.

Decision B:
B1: What will you do when you meet him?
B2: You need to find Sibellius first.

Decision B1: What will you do when you meet him?

That’s a good question…
I honestly haven’t thought that far ahead.

Now that I’m thinking about it… I guess it could go about a hundred different ways…

Decision C:
C1: Are you going to kill him?
C2: He could lie to you, try to manipulate you.

Decision C1: Are you going to kill him?

He deserves it, for everything he’s put me through, for everything he’s done…

But I have to be honest, there are things I really want to know first.
But, it’s not like I won’t pass up a perfect opportunity if one should come my way.

I can’t think about that now though. It’ll only make me angry.
First, I have to find him.

Multiple decision points join the story-line here:

  • Decision B2: You need to find Sibellius first
  • Decision C2: He could lie to you, try to manipulate you

Let’s see…
I’m blocked in by a pain-inducing force-field…

The mechanism generating it appears to be under the floor.
There’s a small access panel on my wall. Let’s see…
No good. It’s just a couple of small jacks. Nothing that controls the force-field, of course.
Any ideas?

Decision D:
D1: Ask Four. He might know something.
D2: Can you damage the force-field generator?

Decision D1: Ask Four. He might know something

[Decision D2: Can you damage the force-field generator? joins the story-line here]

Four, you seem to know a lot about this place… About ALT–

I have a plan. I can set you free.

What? How?!

You talk too much. Just listen for a moment.

Once I set you free, go down to the control room. Put the barracks on lock-down or you’ll be swarmed with guards.
Now, memorise  this code: 3-3-Z-T-S-8-9.
Repeat it to me: 3-3-Z-T-S-8-9. Or have your comm-friend write it down…

Fine, fine! 3-3-Z-T-S-8-9. What’s it for?

You’ll know when the time comes.

C’mon, don’t give me that bu–Hey! Geez, Four!
HE pulled a cable free from his exposed arm.
Four, look, I believe you, all right? But you’re gonna bleed out if you…
What are you doing? Don’t put it in that access panel! You’ll electrocute yourself!
Four, let’s talk about this!

I’m going to free you, Five, but you must move quickly.
Farewell, little brother.

FOUR!

I hope we meet again…

STOP!

The lights went out! I can’t see!
Wair, the emergency lighting’s kicking in. Four? FOUR?
He’s… I can’t believe he…
Hey, the force-field’s gone! Hold on, let me get up.
I’m free… Four…
He didn’t have to do that! We could’ve found a way… I could’ve gotten him out too…

Wait! He’s still breathing!

Decision E:
E1: Help him! He saved you!
E2: Adams, he’s dying…

Decision E1: Help him! He saved you!

Go… leave me…

C’mon Four. Kill the melodrama. I’m… I’m not going to just leave you here.
Get up. Let’s go.

I can’t… feel anything…

You’re dying, aren’t you?
You idiot… Why did you–
What? I can barely hear you.

3… 3… Z… T… S… 8… 9…
Don’t…
Forget…

He’s gone.
He’s right. This is my chance. I can’t waste it.
It’s time to meet my maker.
One way or another…

[Decision E2: Adams, he’s dying… joins the story-line here]

But hey, if all the cell doors are disabled that means… Blue!
Blue! What a good dog. You stayed really well!
I really lucked out finding you, didn’t I? You’re the best dog ever!
How are you buddy? C’mere!
Heh, he’s a little wobbly from that gas, but he’s wagging his tail, so I guess that’s a good sign.
Whoa! He knocked me over! Aww! Ha-ha! You’re glad to see me too, huh?

Ha-ha! He’s licking my face! All right, that’s enough, Blue. We gotta go, buddy.

We’ve got work to do.
All right. It’s time to see what lies beyond this security door here. Thanks to Four’s power outage, these lasers and turrets are disabled, otherwise I’d be toast.

Could Dr. Sibellius be just beyond?
Fingers crossed.
Here we go! It’s…
An empty hallway? I expected a little more behind a door that heavily guarded.

Wait! There’s an elevator.
If I remember correctly, IV Adams said “go down to the control room,” right?

Let’s hope this elevator doesn’t need any kind of security clearance… And that it’s still working…

It’s opening! There’s no alarm…
It says I’m on Level 1… Thankfully there’s only one basement level – at least in this elevator. Let’s try it. I’ll press it.

AHH!
Sorry, that sudden elevator music made me jump!
I’d rather have just awkward silence, personally…
Here’s hoping my comm will still get reception down here…
I guess we’ll find out…
It’s stopping!
Shit! There’s a guard in the next hallway!

Decision F:
F1: Knock him out, if you can.
F2: Kill him, but make it quick.

Decision F1: Knock him out, if you can

This always sounds easier than it is, you know?

[Adams is busy]

He heard me coming. I had to punch him at least five times before he went down.

I got a few bruises myself. He was defending himself.
Now, he’s sleeping like a baby.
I’ll just drag him into the control room. But first, I’ll arm myself. His gun should be more than enough.

[Decision F2: Kill him, but make it quick joins the story-line here]

Now that I’ve taken care of that…
Let;s enter the control room.

Decision G:
G1: Be careful. Take a peek first.
G2: Charge! Use the element of surprise.

Decision G1: Be careful. Take a peek first

Right. I’ve come too far to be careless.

It’s just two scientists. I doubt they’re armed.

They’re going to faint when they see me dragging the guard inside.
Blue, stay. Bark if someone comes.
Got it?
Good boy!

[Decision G2: Charge! Use the element of surprise joins the story-line here]

All right, now hands up!
I’m going to pat you both down for weapons. Hold still.
Good. No weapons.
All right. Stand over there in the corner. Face the wall and put your hands on it.

Hey! Don’t stand too close together.

Are you going to kill us?

Don’t worry, no one has to get hurt as long as you both cooperate.

Decision H:
H1: Don’t turn your back on them, Adams.
H2: They’re just scientists, not soldiers. [Refer to Main Story-line – Decision H1]

Decision H1: Don’t turn your back on them, Adams

Don’t worry. I know what I’m doing.
Listen up, fellas. I’m only gonna ask nicely once.
Which one of these is the master computer terminal?
This one? Good.
Let’s see…
(BEEP!)
“ENTER PASSWORD!”
Oh great! What now?

Decision I:
I1: Ask the scientists. They’ll know it.
I2: Let’s use the code Four gave us. [Refer to Main Story-line – Decision I1]

Decision I1: Let’s use the code Four gave us

What’s the password, fellas?

We don’t know.
Yeah. Only Dr. Sibellius has clearance for it.

Are you lying?

No! I swear to God, I don’t know it!

All right. Now face the wall again.
Hey, I’ve got an idea! What about that password Four told us?

[Decision I2: Let’s use the code Four gave us joins the story-line here]

Um… Do you remember it?
Because I’m drawing a blank…

Decision J:
J1: 33ZTS89
J2: 33ZT8S9

Decision J1: 33ZTS89

I’m glad you’re taking notes!

[Decision J2: 33ZT8S9 joins the story-line here]

“ACCESS GRANTED!”
“WELCOME, DR. SIBELLIUS!”
Thank you, Miss Computer!
Now, are you two still behaving?
Good.
Let’s see what we’ve got there…
Two choices: “Production Hall Controls” or :Facility Controls”

Decision K:
K1: Production Hall Controls
K2: Facility Controls

Decision K1: Production Hall Controls

[Decision K2: Facility Controls joins the story-line here]

Whoa! They’re so main options. I don’t even know where to begin.
Whole department rosters, experiment data, live camera feed to… the production line?

What’s that? Let’s find out…
My God… There’s so many! Is ALT building an army?
They’re so many kinds too!
Wait, here’s a series list. There’s at least a hundred! No, maybe SEVERAL hundred…

I think they’re grouped by type. Let’s just look at a file. Here’s the Wilson Series…

Looks like a military drone… Features: high-calibre rounds, gyroscope stabilisers, anti-grav generator, max. speed: 60 mph…

“Suggested Role: Combat”
Let’s try another…
Murdoch Series… “Military android. Features: 100x magnification, long-range recording, night vision…”

“Suggested Role: Surveillance”

Geez… These are all top-of-the-line robotics. The costs to produce these … they’d have to be astronomical!

I’m just skimming, but it would take me hours to read all of these…
Wait, does that mean there’s an Adams file?

I’ve gotta check… Hold on there’s a search function.
Nothing? I’ll search manually then…

Abner,… Abelli… Abrams… Addison… Adkins… Adler…
Nothing!

Decision L:
L1: Check again!
L2: That’s strange…

Decision L1: Check again!

I checked and rechecked. There is no “Adams” file.
I was hoping for some instant gratification, but it seems I’ll have to ask Sibellius myself.

There’s one more thing too…

[Decision L2: That’s strange… joins the story-line here]

All of these robots have pretty terrifying roles. To kill… to spy… Who knows what else…
If I really came from this facility, why isn’t my file here?
Am I some top secret project? I mean… for all I know… I could be some kind of living bomb!
Or maybe…

Decision M:
M1: You’re wildly speculating again, my friend…
M2: There will be time for thinking later!

Decision M1: You’re wildly speculating again, my friend…

True.
In the meantime, I’ve got to find Dr. Sibellius.

Wait. Here are the facility controls. Four said I should lock down the barracks, right?

I guess it’s worth a try.

I’m not sure how to get them all into the barracks…
Hmm…
Wait! What if I lock down the barracks, and then sound an alarm in the garage. Once they all swarm into the garage, I lock it down too.
That would at least trap most of the guards, so I can reach Sibellius without too many thugs in my way.
And once I’m done with him… Maybe I can escape?
But first, let’s see if this terminal can do what I want…
Locking down the barracks. Success!
All right. Sounding alarm… For all units… Location… Garage!
There it goes! I’ll be honest, my nerves are shot right now…
Now, let’s wait, say… five minutes. Give them time to reach the garage.

All right.
Keep your fingers crossed.

[Adams is busy]

I checked the cameras! There’s a ton of them in there!
All right. Locking down… garage!
Done! That should buy me at least half an hour to get to Sibellius and get the hell outta here.

[Decision M2: There will be time for thinking later! joins the story-line here]

[END OF CHAPTER 12a / START OF CHAPTER 13x]

You know, I was thinking… Even if I escape ALT, they’re gonna keep on manufacturing… all of this…
These machines are built for destruction and chaos. Who knows what they’re doing with them? Selling them to the highest bidder, probably…

Maybe some of them… are even like me. Trapped here. Forced to follow their programming to the death.
I can’t let this cycle of suffering continue. I’m going to destroy it. All of it.

What do you think?

Alternate Routes

Decision A2: You need to face the truth

How? Could you just be calm and accept that you’re a robot, programmed to do God-only-knows-what?

Forced to be a thief? A spy? Even an assassin?
Can Dr. Sibellius force me to do things against my will?
I don’t know.

But I know how to find out.
Sibellius and I are going to have a little father-son chat.

[Refer to Main Story-line – Decision A1]

Decision B2: You need to find Sibellius first

Yeah, I agree.
This is already taking me longer than I’d like.

I’ll lose my mind if I don’t talk to him soon…

But first things first.

[Refer to Main Story-line – Decision C1]

Decision C2: He could lie to you, try to manipulate you

I couldn’t agree more.
But now that I know about him…
I want to know why he’s even doing all of this. He’s got to have some motive…

But first things first.

[Refer to Main Story-line – Decision C1]

Decision D2: Can you damage the force-field generator?

I’m doubting ALT is the kind to save money by making cheap cell electronics…

I’d get shocked if I got close to it… I could dig into the floor, but I’d probably set off some alarm.
But you know, I’ll ask Four for help. He might have an idea.

[Refer to Main Story-line – Decision D1]

Decision E2: Adams, he’s dying…

You’re right.
There’s nothing I could do for him. I should let him die in peace.
Four! I won’t forget what you did. Ever.

I’m not gonna waste the time you’ve bought me.

[Refer to Main Story-line – Decision E1]

Decision F2: Kill him, but make it quick

It’s done.
I’ll spare you the details.
Now… what to do with the body? Hmm…

I don’t have time to hide it.
I’ll just take him with me into the control room.
I’m taking his gun too. I feel better now. Stronger, even.

[Refer to Main Story-line – Decision F1]

Decision G2: Charge! Use the element of surprise

Blue, stay. Bark if someone comes.
Got it?
Good boy!
Here goes! AHH!
It’s just two scientists.
Stand up!
Slowly…
Good.

[Refer to Main Story-line – Decision G1]

Decision J2: 33ZT8S9

Here goes…
“ACCESS DENIED”
Wait, wasn’t it 33ZT89?
Let’s try that.
“ACCESS DENIED”
Shoot…
Wait! It’s 33ZTS89. I forgot the S!
Please work…

[Refer to Main Story-line – Decision J1]

Decision K2: Facility Controls

I’m not sure how to get them all into the barracks…
Hmm…
Wait! What if I lock down the barracks, and then sound an alarm in the garage. Once they all swarm into the garage, I lock it down too.
That would at least trap most of the guards, so I can reach Sibellius without too many thugs in my way.

[Adams is busy]

I checked the cameras! There’s a ton of them in there!
All right. Locking down… garage!
Done! That should buy me at least half an hour to get to Sibellius and get the hell outta here.

Oh wait! Here are the Production Hall controls.
Can I do something here too?

[Refer to Main Story-line – Decision K1]

Decision L2: That’s strange…

Agreed! That makes me wonder…

[Refer to Main Story-line – Decision L1]

Decision M2: There will be time for thinking later!

True.
In the meantime, I’ve got to find Dr. Sibellius.

[Refer to Main Story-line – Decision M1]

Commentary & Analysis

The process flowchart for Chapter 12a is virtually identical to Chapter 10, except that two addition decision nodes exist. The main route is linear with only one outcome/exit which leads us directly to Chapter 13a.

The shortest route is thus 12 steps:

  1. Decision A1: No it doesn’t
  2. Decision B2: You need to find Sibellius first
  3. Decision D1: Ask Four. He might know something
  4. Decision E1: Help him! He saved you!
  5. Decision F1: Knock him out, if you can
  6. Decision G1: Be careful. Take a peek first
  7. Decision H1: Don’t turn your back on them, Adams
  8. Decision I1: Ask the scientists. They’ll know it
  9. Decision J1: 33ZTS89
  10. Decision K1: Production Hall Controls
  11. Decision L1: Check again!
  12. Decision M1: You’re wildly speculating again, my friend…

In this way, it does not really matter if you memorise the password given by Four, or whether you are compassionate, sparing the life of the guard or stopping briefly to “help” Four before he dies. The order and sequence for checking the Production Hall or Facility controls also does not matter since they converge back at the progression to Chapter 13x Sabotage the Production.

To make these articles more efficient, you can download the following Excel file which lists out all 12,288 possible routes. Instead, the following statistical observations provide an overall summary:

  • The total possible routes, when starting backwards from Decision M to Decision C is calculated by:
    • # of decisions: 11
    • Possibilities: 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 (2 ^ 11) = 2,048
  • The total possible routes, when starting backwards from Decision M to Decision B is calculated by:
    • For B1, we can use the same formula as above: 2 ^ 12 = 4,096.
    • For B2, the same number of possibilities existed for getting to C1 (2048) so we add that on (4,096 + 2,048 = 6,144)
  • Finally, to calculate the total number of possible routes:
    • Double the previous total (6144) to cater for the additional starting Decision A
    • 6,144 x 2 = 12,288 total possible routes
    • 9,146 routes (88%) have 13 decision nodes (Decision B1 followed)
    • 1,234 routes (12%) have 12 decision nodes (Decision B2 followed)
